Does a Church need marketing?
By: Kennedy Imuere CEO of Strictly Business Consulting. Kennedy works as a Consultant-Trainer-Speaker-Author in the UK.
Before we can answer this simple question, we need to look at the elements which make up the marketing. In general these are referred to as the 4P’s for products and 7P’s for services.
Clearly a Church will fall under the 7P’s because it is a service.
What are the 7P’s?
7P’s are an abbreviation used by marketing professionals to help them remember these fundamental elements.
The 7P’s are:
• Product
• Promotion
• Price
• Place
• Physical Evidence
• People
• Process
How does this apply to the Church?
Product: the product the Church has to offer is the Gospel of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, which is the best product in the market today. Don’t you agree? This product can totally transform your life and it is not marketed enough - why?
Promotion: how is the Church communicating this message to its potential market which is everybody? The Bible says in Mark, Chapter 16 verse 15: And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature (KJV). I am sure this verse is in your bible. Clearly if the Church can gets this P right, the Church will grow immensely.
Price: Even though the Gospel is FREE, the Church still has bills to pay and the income is viewed as the price that is the member tithes and offering. Clearly you cannot eat in MacDonald’s restaurant and go and pay at KFC. Therefore all members should tithe in their local Church. The Bible commands us in Malachi 3 verse 10: Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it (KJV).
Place: This is the most important P for the Churches – especially Christian ones that are highly blessed with cars: everybody wants to drive to Church on Sunday. However, if the Church is poorly located, then parking is a major issue. I clearly believe that most Church planters do not take this into consideration in their planning, hence problems with the community at large and the locals being forced - in some cases - to introduce parking restrictions outside Churches in the UK.
Physical Evidence: This P is looking at the presentation of the Church - that is the decoration and the colour scheme. You can say that this is not important because ultimately we are not gathering to please man but to receive from God. But, unfortunately, we are human beings which means unless we are comfortable, we will not stay or listen to the message.
People: This P is the one that can make or break a Church because the income of the Church depends on the membership to a degree. It’s true to say that Church generally needs dedicated members who are committed both spiritually and financially. A Pastor – often the lynchpin of any Church - should spend his time at the feet of the Lord to receive so he can be of a greater blessing to the congregation.
Process: This P looks at the way the whole Church operates - generally, what happens to the offerings and tithes, the number of staff and the entire department that the Church needs to function. For example, how does the Church get its donations or tithes? Is it through standing orders or cheques? I am guessing it does not look at the marketing or publicity department because it does not have one.
Clearly the 7P’s can be applied to the Church effectively and this in turn means a Church does need marketing. I guess for most Church Leaders the view of marketing is perhaps very narrow because when they hear the word marketing they think you are calling to sell them some product or service they do not need. What do you think of when you hear the word marketing? Anyway now you know better.
